Cheap summer thrills

Lack of money sucking all the fun out of your weekends? Look no further-these cheap thrills will scare the bejesus out of you.

By Julia Kramer

Crash into me
Because a sport in which the goal is to simply crash cars isn’t insane enough to watch, this year’s Demolition Derby (Aug 2, noon; free with fair admission) at the Lake County Fair will have some additional twists: Drivers in the compact-car class will compete in either a tollbooth race (drivers make five laps around the track, dropping a styrofoam puck into a 55-gallon drum each time) or a suicide race (three cars drive clockwise while the other three drive counterclockwise, and the winner must complete five laps around the track). Joseph Valente III, president of Darkhorse Racing Events: “This is something no one at the Lake County Fair has seen before.” Because anyone who has seen it died in the ensuing explosion. We kid.
