July 9–11, 2010

FRIDAY 9
Cyrus The premise—John C. Reilly is dating Marisa Tomei, but things hit a snag when her son Jonah Hill tries to sabotage the relationship—sounds like a big wacky comedy, and the cast might suggest Apatovian fun. Prepare to be shocked by a more heartfelt, sincere movie from mumblecore’s brother-directors Mark and Jay Duplass. —Hank Sartin
Great Performers of Illinois in Millennium Park This celebration of all things Illinois features folk music, local wineries, square dancing, Abe Lincoln impersonators and a corn maze. Jul 9 6:30–10pm, Jul 10 7am–11pm, Jul 11 11am–10pm. Free.—Madeline Nusser
Latin Jazz Fest at Humboldt Park boathouse Headliners Chévere, with drummer Alejo Poveda leading the band and Howard Levy diving in on harmonica, piano and mandolin, are one hot Afro-Cuban and Brazilian band. A full horn section and plenty of Latin percussion crank up the wattage, and the throbbing Hammond B-3 doesn’t slow things down. 1359 N Sacramento Ave (312-427-1676). 7pm, free.—Brent DiCrescenzo
The Kids Are All Right Two teens of a lesbian couple seek out their biological father. He charms his way into the family, even striking some sparks with one of the lesbians. Expect some uneasiness from the LGBT community. (Why do high-profile movies about lesbians always have a “she tries straight sex” story?) But given the cast (Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo), also expect great performances. Opens Wednesday 7.—Hank Sartin
SATURDAY 10
Cheap Trick + Squeeze at Ravinia Viagra could be a sponsor, but we challenge you to find an evening with songs better than “Surrender,” “I Want You To Want Me,” “Up the Junction” and “Goodbye Girl.” Listen to your older sister: Squeeze is seriously overdue for rediscovery. The reunited Specials have no Chicago tour date, so this is the best it gets in terms of early ’80s Britpop. Ravinia Pavilion. 7:30pm, $22–$50.—Brent DiCrescenzo
Summer Studio at SAIC Artists from Chicago and beyond invite the public to watch them at work in temporary studios at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s exhibition space in the former Carson Pirie Scott building. Jul 6–Aug 27. Sullivan Galleries, 33 S State St, seventh floor (312-629-6635, saic.edu/exhibitions). Free.—Lauren Weinberg
West Fest (July 10, 11)
SUNDAY 11
L.A.T.E. Ride Join 9,000 other cyclists for a 25-mile overnight ride through neighborhoods (high-five the drunkards) and along the lake (watch the sunrise). Meet at Buckingham Fountain (500 S Columbus Dr, lateride.org). Times TBD. $45–$75.—Laura Baginski
Folk and Roots Festival (July 10, 11)
Roscoe Village Burger Fest (July 10, 11)
