On the scene: Jon LaJoie at Just for Laughs

I've been hyping musical comic Jon LaJoie for awhile now but I admit I'd never seen the guy live before until last night and I was worried that the internet sensation wouldn't deliver. The Montreal-based comic has racked up YouTube hits with videos like "Everyday Normal Guy", a rap song about a mundane dude—I like the show Gilmore Girls motherfuckers he sings—and "2 Girls One Cup song"—Some people like to kiss, some people like to hug...some people puke semi-digested shit into each other's mouths. But like Weird Al, this kind of juvenile fodder seems best encapsulated within the 3-minute video format.

I was happy that last night's show, Live as Fuck, proved me wrong. The show was a multimedia mix of stand-up, video and live music, augmented by LaJoie's natural comic abilities. He started the show with "Everyday Normal Guy" and followed with a pre-recorded PSA on not giving a fuck. LaJoie then took the mike and first apologized for feeling under the weather. "I'm sick. Never blow four homeless guys just because they ask you to," he deadpanned before admitting that he was a total sellout who put the show together last minute at the insistence of his agent. "[He told me] If you do stand-up comedy we'll get that priest to stop touching you in the bathing suit area."

LaJoie bolted through a half a dozen or so of his YouTube hits like "Too Fast," a ditty devoted to premature ejaculation and the stoner's anthem "High as Fuck". Hearing the songs sans video reminded me that LaJoies has an impressive attention to genre be it gangster rap, 90s cock rock, self-absorbed singer-songwriter anthems and so forth. But it was his guitar-driven rendition of Ghostbusters—I ain't afraid of no cocksucking ghost!—that was the evening highlight for me. It was dumb and just plain funny as fuck. The evening's one lowlight was its finale. LaJoie ended with "Show Me Your Genitals," arguably among his most popular but a lyrical weak spot for such a talented wordsmith. It rarely works when a performer tries to recreate a video live as LaJoie attempted to do here. But that was a single low. Otherwise I left the show high as fuck—metaphorically speaking.
