2009 Cannes lineup: A fortnight—er, footnote
Regarding yesterday's speculation about the fate of Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro—which I've heard is very good—it turns out it's the opening-night selection of Cannes's down-the-street rival festival, Directors' Fortnight, which announced its own lineup today. That may mean that Coppola was denied a spot on Cannes's competition slate, or it may just mean that one group was better at courting Coppola than the other. [UPDATE: He was first offered a noncompeting spot.] The whole notion of rival programmers is kind of hilarious if you take a step back from it. But on the ground at Cannes, these turf wars matter.
Anyway, it's on: At the Fortnight, there are new films to look forward to by internationally acclaimed directors like Hong Sang-soo, Pedro Costa, Alain Guiraudie and Luc Moullet, along with Sundance holdovers like Humpday and I Love You Phillip Morris, which stars Jim Carrey as a con man who escapes from prison to be with his lover (Ewan McGregor). Jim Carrey and Pedro Costa: That's festival diversity for you.
