On the fantastic new Beware, recorded here at Engine Studios, Oldham’s voice is more assured than ever, no longer cracking and unpredictably punctuating his melodies like an adolescent. Tonight, Oldham appears in his first local show in nearly three years backed by guitarist Emmett Kelly, bassist Josh Abrams and Cheyenne Mize on harmony and fiddle, anchored by brilliant drummer Jim White of Cat Power and Dirty Three. 8pm. MUSEUMS & CULTURE - South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Family Fest
BAC offers families both a refuge and a great vantage point for what’s widely considered the largest neighborhood-based St. Patrick’s Day parade outside of Dublin. Revelers can warm up inside or stay close to the action outside, depending on the whims of the weather. Meanwhile indoors, the center teems with live music—traditional and otherwise—as well as dancers, an Irish comedian, bagpipers, movies, kids’ crafts and more. 11am–5pm. SPORTS & REC - St. Paddy’s Day 5K
Sandwiched in between the downtown parade and the holiday known for its puke-and-rally routine (St. Patrick’s Day), this 5K hopes to lure a few souls to sport some green and run, walk or crawl (for those of us nursing a wee bit of a hangover from the downtown parade) along the lakefront. And faith and begorra, wouldn’t you know, it’s all topped off with a bit of drink and eats at Trinity Bar & Grill (2721 N Halsted St). 9am. Diversey Harbor, 2500 N Cannon Dr at Fullerton Pkwy (773-868-3010, chicagoevents.com). Bus: 77 (24hrs), 151 (24hrs), 156. $25–$30, kids’ Leprechaun Leap free ($8–$10 for T-shirts).
