Old Chicago

Madeline Nusser

Field day In 1941, Marshall Field’s 28 Shop opened and quickly became an international fashion hub visited by the likes of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. Named for its private address—28 East Washington Street—and its 28 private salons, the chic shop forbade the practice of trying on clothes. Instead, models displayed gowns while shoppers rested comfortably on chaise lounges. These days, the shop, which still hawks designer duds, doesn’t deliver quite as much pomp and circumstance. But on Fri 28, Macy’s Glamorama, a tradition carried on from the former Marshall Field’s, gives a taste of yesteryear’s extravagance with a runway show featuring 28 Shop designers.
