Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition
Dir. James Cameron. 2009. PG-13. 162mins. Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana.
In case nearly three hours of giant blue aliens isn’t enough, the three-disc collector’s edition contains eight hours of special features (that’s a full work day!). Highlights include an extended cut of the film with an alternate opening sequence, 45 minutes of deleted scenes and a documentary, Capturing Avatar. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
The Kids Are All Right
Dir. Lisa Cholodenko. 2010. R. 104mins. Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo.
The script is sharp, ensemble is spot-on and the relationships are…complicated. Cholodenko’s twist on the nuclear-family drama is as delightful as it is funny. On DVD, Blu-Ray and on demand.
Modern Times
Dir. Charles Chaplin. 1936. N/R. 87mins. Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard.
As the last of Chaplin’s full-length silent films (despite the fact that it was released during the sound age), Modern Times marks the end of an era. This edition contains an interview with music arranger David Raksin, audio commentary by Chaplin biographer David Robinson and a couple of shorter Chaplin films. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
RoboGeisha
Dir. Noboru Iguchi. 2009. N/R. 102mins. Aya Kiguchi, Hitomi Hasebe.
Billed as “a tale of sibling rivalry, chainsaw faces, machine-gun boobs and butt blades,” this Japanese B-movie about geishas-turned–cyber warriors should, at the very least, fill your butt-blade quota for the month. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
